Entertainment Earth Offers 6″ Star Wars Black Series Wave 7

starwarsAwesomeToyBlog sponsor Entertainment Earth has posted pre-orders for the 7th wave of 6″ Star Wars Black Series figures. This wave features Bossk and Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise along with repacks of Chewbacca and the TIE Fighter Pilot. These are available as a case of four or you can order just Bossk or Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise. These are tentatively slated for April release.

Star Wars Black Series Wave 7

What I Opened Today: Star Wars Black Series TIE Pilot and Yoda

In 2014, the 6″ Star Wars Black Series became one of my favorite toy lines and right after I got back from Phoenix I found the newest wave in a local Target store. Wave 6 includes the TIE Pilot, Yoda, a Clone Commander (Clone Trooper with a green stripe) and a repackaged Obi-Wan. I picked up the TIE Pilot and Yoda, leaving the others behind. These are hitting stores now and are available online (Entertainment Earth has the case of four).

Package Bio: TIE Pilot: TIE Fighter Pilots battle rebel starfighters during the battle of Yavin. These elite imperial pilots deploy from the Death Star battle station and blast the rebel fighters with laser canon fire. “Look out!”

Yoda: On the remote swamp planet Dagobah, Jedi Master Yoda teaches young Luke Skywalker the ways of the Jedi and the power of the Force. “My ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is.”

Thoughts: The sixth wave of 6″ Black Series figure includes the T.I.E. Pilot and Yoda but also a Clone Trooper Commander (clone with a green stripe) and a re-pack of Obi-Wan Kenobi. I picked up these two since they’re the newest in the wave.  I picked these up at Target, but have seen them available online as well (Entertainment Earth has the case in-stock).

The TIE Pilot has the articulation that we’ve become accustomed to in these 6″ Star Wars figures – ankles, knees, thigh, hip, waist, shoulder, elbow, wrist and neck. There’s a ton of sculpted details on his uniform, but with the figure being mostly black, they don’t stand out very well. The limited paint on the figure – most notably the emblems on the helmet – are well executed. The TIE Pilot comes with a gun which fits snugly in it’s holster.

Yoda’s a bit of a departure from your standard Black Series figure. For starters he’s under three and a half inches tall. Due to his shorter stature, in his package there’s a ton of empty space. Yoda has similar articulation to the TIE Pilot with the exception of having no knees and having a ball joint at his waist instead of a swivel. Yoda’s wearing a soft goods cloak and comes with a necklace, cane, lightsaber and snake (a nice vintage figure touch). I can only describe the sculpt as being generically Yoda. It’s obviously Yoda, but it’s tough to know which Yoda he is…is this an Episode I Yoda, or a Return of the Jedi Yoda? Well, at least he came with a snake.

Summary: This pair of Star Wars Black Series, the TIE Pilot and Yoda, are the first ones that feel firmly in the “They’re ok” bucket. The TIE Pilot is a very good figure of a not terribly interesting trooper. Yoda is an ok figure of a fantastic character…when I’m most excited about the inclusion of a snake as an accessory the figure has missed the mark a bit. On the upside – both of these are better than the Return of the Jedi Luke figure, which I just don’t like at all.

What I Opened Today: Star Wars Black Series 6″ Chewbacca

starwarsLast week my box of Star Wars Black Series Wave 5 finally arrived from Entertainment Earth. With all the trips I’ve made to Walgreens in the past month, I’ve been tempted by Jedi Luke and Chewbacca many, many times but I held out! Now that my order arrived, I’m giving each figure a once over. Yesterday was Darth Vader and today is Han’s best bud, Chewbacca.

Package Bio: Chewbacca is Han Solo’s copilot on the MILLENNIUM FALCON. The powerful wookiee is a courageous fighter, skilled mechanic and loyal friend who joins the fight to save the galaxy.

“Rrrooaarrgghh! Awrggh! Rwaah-oh-oh!”

Thoughts: It’s impossible for me to start this review with anything other than Chewbacca’s quote. It’s awesome, but I can’t place exactly where in the trilogy it’s from. If you know, leave me a comment!

Moving on from the quote, the first thing that you notice when freeing Chewbacca from the box is how big he is. Chewie stands nearly 7 3/4″ tall, giving him a good, in-scale, height advantage over his fellow 6″ figures. It’s awesome that Hasbro was able to fit him into a regular wave and get him into fan’s hands for just $20.

Chewbacca features articulated ankles, knees, thigh swivel, hips, waist, chest, shoulders, elbows, wrists and neck. His neck motion is limited somewhat by his sculpted hair, but you can still turn it a bit. The sculpted hair also limits articulation at the wrists and ankles, but this is a fair trade off against having the joints be exposed. Accessory wise, Chewie includes his murse (or wurse? Wookiee purse?) and his bowcaster which you assemble. You might want to use a dab of glue when you put yours together, that way it’ll stay in one piece. It was a bit of work getting his gun into his hand.

The sculpted hair looks good on this figure, with a majority of Chewie’s body being one medium brown color with darker brown accents. I’m not describing it great, but he’s pretty well colored. The paint decos around the remaining details, particularly his eyes are quite good which really sell this figure.

Summary: Han’s best bud is finally here and the pair look great on the shelf together. This Chewie sculpt will be a great base for future variants like the Leia as Boushh with prisoner Chewbacca I pitched for next year’s SDCC.  I ordered Chewbacca, and the rest of the Wave 5 case, from Entertainment Earth.

What I Opened Today: Star Wars Black Series 6″ Darth Vader

starwarsLast week my box of Star Wars Black Series Wave 5 finally arrived from Entertainment Earth. With all the trips I’ve made to Walgreens in the past month, I’ve been tempted by Jedi Luke and Chewbacca many, many times (had I seen Darth Vader, I would have bought him). I held firm though and patiently waited until my pre-order arrived…well, maybe patiently isn’t the right word to use. Each day this week we’ll look at one of the figures – starting with Darth Vader.

Package Bio: After Darth Vader and Luke join forces to defeat the Emperor, Vader asks Luke to help him remove the mask that covers his face.

“Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes.”

Thoughts: Let’s get the ‘negative’ out of the way first – the helmet isn’t perfect and when Hasbro makes a version without the unmasking feature (maybe an Episode IV version) it’ll be more screen accurate. With that said, I can now gush about how awesome this figure is.

This is the figure from the wave that I couldn’t wait to tear open and I was not disappoint. Minor mask quibbles aside, Darth’s awesome. The sculpt is quite good and features articulation as the ankles, knee, hips, waist, shoulders, elbows, wrists and neck. His helmet is removable, which makes me think back to how big of a deal it was when that first 3 3/4″ figure had a removable helmet. Darth Vader has both a cloth skirt and cape – which is quite full and connects at the neck with real chain. Vader’s lightsaber, his only accessory, features a removable blade. There are no spots for him to hang the hilt on his belt.

Look, the 6″ Star Wars line is firing on all cylinders and hasn’t had a miss yet (distribution / case packs excluded). Darth Vader is such a definitive character, I’m surprised it took five waves for him to be released, but he’s here now and he’s my favorite Black Series figure yet. I’m particularly impressed with how well the soft goods cape works – capes just don’t work this well at the 3 3/4″ scale.

Summary: I can already tell that Vader’s going to be one of those figures that takes up residency on my desk as I can see myself sitting in a teleconference just futzing with him. I may have had to wait five waves, but it was well worth it as this first 6″ Black series Vader is among the best of the line. He should be starting to hit stores (online and real life). I ordered mine from Entertainment Earth.

Hasbro’s Star Wars Day Reveals – Jabba and Yoda

starwarsStar Wars Day, May the 4th, brought a few exciting Star Wars reveals from the Star Wars team at Hasbro. I’ve already shared the news of Jabba the Hutt with Salacious Crumb as the 6″ Black Series SDCC exclusive, but it’s been announced that this will have a price around $65.  There are several new photos of this at the bottom of the post.

The second reveal was a brand new Black Series reveal – Yoda.  He’ll be available later this year.

Details of Wave 4 of 6″ Star Wars Black Series Revealed

starwarsOur friends at Entertainment Earth today posted the case details for the 4th wave of 6″ Star Wars Black Series figures. Due out in approximately June, the four figures in this case include a Revenge of the Sith Anakin Skywalker, a Clone Trooper and repacks of Boba Fett and the Stormtrooper – both of which continue to be rare on store shelves. At Entertainment Earth the case of four figures runs $79.99 (and if purchased through a link on this site, AwesomeToyBlog does make some coin) and you’ll save the hassle of going store to store. The case is listed here.

Third Wave of 6″ Star Wars Black Series Available for Pre-Order

starwarsOnline retailer Entertainment Earth has posted the third wave (or first wave of 2014, depending on how you plan to count) of 6″ Star Wars Black Series figures up for pre-order. This wave includes Bespin Luke, Episode III Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Stormtrooper and a re-pack of Episode IV Han Solo. While I can’t quite wrap my head around re-packing Han instead of including a second Stormtrooper – you can get all 4 figures in one case for $79.99 – roughly the same (or slightly cheaper) than brick & mortar pricing. You can see the listing here, and they are due in Jaunary 2014.

Official Images of 1st 2014 Wave of 6″ Star Wars Black Series Figures

starwarsLet’s be honest – I wasn’t completely sold on 6″ Star Wars figures when they were first announced. It really isn’t my preferred scale…but once I got my hands on the first wave? ALL IN. As a result, I’m pleased to share with you the official images of the 3rd wave (or 1st wave of 2014) of 6″ Star Wars figures. This wave includes a Stormtrooper, Bespin Luke and an Episode III Obi-Wan Kenobi. I could not be more excited about these – especially that Stormtrooper.  Enjoy!
