Free Comic Book Day Invades the Valley this Saturday

Comic book enthusiasts take over local comic book shops in this year’s worldwide event.

Phoenix – This Saturday May 5, 2012 is Free Comic Book Day. Free Comic Book Day is a one-day event
that occurs on the first Saturday in May each year where participating comic book shops both nationally and
worldwide (willingly) give out FREE comic books. The event started in 2002 and this Saturday will be the 11 th
straight year that it will be held.

The Phoenix metro area is excited to have several local comic book shops participating in this great and fun
event. And because we are Phoenix Comicon and our annual event is right around the corner, there are 10 local
shops that will be giving away 2012 Phoenix Comicon booklets and even better, will be holding a drawing for a

It’s just around the corner – May 4th is the US premiere of ‘The Avengers’. To coincide with the release, Jakks has sent out details of their upcoming products for ‘The Avengers’ – both role play costumes and 2.5″ collectible figures.

For the younger kids they can use CDI’s The Avengers Dress Up Sets to become their favorite hero. Complete with full body costumes and injection molded masks, kids can become  Iron Man, Captain America or the Incredible Hulk. (SRP $14.99, Ages 3+)  Dress up sets  are  expected  to  be  available  timed  to  the  film’s  release at retailers including Target, Toys R Us and Amazon.com.

Also on deck are CDI‘s new  2.5” Collectible Figures. Featuring highly detailed sculpts and poses pulled from memorable scenes in Marvel’s The Avengers, these figures are sure to grab the attention of adult collectors and young fans alike! Star Wars Day is May the 4th (get it? May the 4th??) and to celebrate LEGO Star Wars is creating a virtual mosaic experience for fans. This Friday, May 4th (Avengers opening day), visitors of any LEGO brand retail stores and LEGO.com are encouraged to build a LEGO Star Wars creation, take a photo of their creation and then upload it to the starwars.lego.com/creations page. These images will then be compiled into the largest ever LEGO Star wars virtual mosaic image to be revealed on May 5th! To top it off – one random submitter will will a Lego Darth Maul desktop build.  Happy Star Wars day!

This is a rumor, but a very likely to happen one. Miss Jo Grant herself – Katy Manning, has posted a picture of her with two Jo Grant action figure prototypes. While it’s a bit difficult to make out the details of the figures, they are two distinct ones. The first figure, with the fur coat is from ‘The Three Doctors’ and the second one is from ‘Claws of Axos’. No details on pack-ins with these figures or when/how they’ll be available. I’ve seen a few places say these are the SDCC figures – but that’s just rampant speculation. Underground Toys has said that an announcement of new figures was around the corner, so perhaps the cat is out of the bag.

Straight out of Botcon comes news on some SDCC Transformers exclusives. While no pictures were allowed in the panel the 2 announced exclusives are:

•  TF: Prime Zombie Cliffjumper packaged in his zombie head
• TF: Fall of Cybertron Bruticus with G1 metallic colors packaged in a book style box.

I’m hoping to get a comprehensive report from Botcon, as there’s tons of news announced including a Transformers subscription service!

Two SDCC 2012 posts in a row? That can only mean its getting closer and closer to Comic-con! Bif Bang Pow, via AFI, have announced their first SDCC exclusive for the year -The Twilight Zone The Invaders Diorama. Not only is this one of their SDCC exclusives, but its a whole new category of product for Bif Bang Pow! – dioramas. This diorama measures 10″ deep x 8″ wide and 7 1/2″ tall. With a TV correct deco (that’s right it was in black and white) this piece recreates a moment from the episode “The Invaders”.  Priced at just $25 this is a steal if you’re a fan of the property. That trailer was brand new from Telltale Games, featuring the story of ‘A New Day’ the first of five episodes of the Walking Dead game series. This series takes a look at an unexplored corner of ‘The Walking Dead’ universe – featuring Lee Everett, a murderer who finds himself free in a world of vicious zombies.  This episode is available now on PlayStation Network ($4.99), and available soon on Xbox LIVE (400 points) and as season pass covering all five episodes for $24.99 from the Telltale Online Store for Mac / PC.

With the opening of ‘The Avengers’ just around the corner – May 4th for the not obsessively tracking folks, eFx sent out a quick update on their upcoming Avengers prop replicas.  These pieces, which debuted at Wondercon to rave reviews, will be available for preorder soon.  If you want to be informed of the pre-order details first, or at least in the first group, send an email to MarvelUpdates@efxcollectibles.com to get added to the list.  These are some awesome pieces, and I wouldn’t post them if I didn’t love them!

NECA took to their twitter account this weekend and was sharing glimpses into their world. Among the news items, they announced that the 2012 SDCC exclusives Predator item is a “Cloaked City Hunter” figure. Unfortunately they’ve not released any images of the figure, so you’ll have to be satisfied with the cardback, which is below.
