Photo Op – Avengers #1 Cover

Marvel Universe - Avengers 1 Cover

This was one of the rate photo projects where I went from idea to finished photo in one evening.  To make that challenging; this was also one of the rare photo projects that heavily relied on my Photoshop skills.  My Avengers boxset from HasbroToyShop was delivered and I was immediately enamored with it!  I just loved the retro stylings of the figures and I was suddenly inspired to re-create the cover to Avengers #1.  I downloaded the cover; and took to removing the Avengers from it; leaving the header area and Loki in the foreground.  Below that were 3 layers of action figure photos taken in the light tent; with the figures isolated from the background – one for Wasp, one for Ant Man and one for Iron Man, Hulk and Thor.  The final layer was a solid grey layer where I had drawn lines for a floor and some sort of wall panel.

Wasp and Ant Man were the most problematic to photograph; I had placed a pin into each figure leaving them hanging from Croc Master’s hand.  Once photographed, I erased any sign of the pin in the photo.  All in all, it was a few hours work – the most time consuming was removing elements of the original cover; but I’m very pleased with the outcome.

Toys R Us has Hasbro 3 3/4″ sale this week – 2 for $10.99

August 7th, 2011 MattG Posted in Marvel, Sale, Star Wars 1 Comment »

Once again, Toys R Us is offering their 2 for $10.99 promotion across their Hasbro brands – Marvel Universe, Captain America, Thor, GI Joe, Iron Man and Star Wars.  One important caveat – this time the sale is advertised as ALL figures, and reports online are indicating that the Star Wars Vintage collection is included.  If that’s the case, this is essentially a buy-one-get-one free sale, so be sure to check it out!  The sale runs all this week.

SDCC 2011 – Kotobukiya

July 25th, 2011 MattG Posted in Marvel, News, Star Wars No Comments »

My first real introduction to Kotobukiya’s product line was this past February at toy fair when I was struck by their impressive Stormtrooper display as well as their ‘Han in Carbonite’ ice cube trays.  I was pleased to see a great SDCC presence by the company which focused on their Star Wars statues, their Marvel fine are statues and their DC and Marvel bishoujo statues lines (the ‘diamond’ Emma Frost statue looked fantastic).

SDCC 2011 – Gentle Giant

July 25th, 2011 MattG Posted in Marvel, News, Star Wars No Comments »

Gentle Giant’s display on the floor included their busts and statues from their many licenses.  Included were displays focused on Star Wars (including their 12″ vintage line), Marvel Comics, Sucker Punch and more.  Sorry for the glare on many of these pictures, year after year photographing the Gentle Giant displays prove to be challenging because of the curved plexi-glass cases uses.

Earlier today, the news hit that not only would Lego be releasing construction sets based on DC Universe properties, they would also be releasing sets based on Marvel properties as well!  At preview night, Lego had a bit of a teaser on hand as they had a select few mini-figures from each Universe.  And frankly, they looked great.  Check them out in the gallery below; I’m going to have to get my hands (or claws!) on these!

SDCC 2011 – Hasbro’s Thor

July 20th, 2011 MattG Posted in Marvel, News No Comments »

With his feature film released just month’s ago, and wave 2 of of the toy line just now showing up in stores (slowly) Hasbro had some floor space dedicated to Thor.  While I don’t think there were any new reveals compared to toy fair, this is a good opportunity to revisit what’s coming up for the God of Thunder.

July 20th, 2011 MattG Posted in Marvel, News No Comments »

One of the highlights of tonight personally was seeing the new offerings for Marvel Universe, which has quickly become one of my favorite lines.  Among the reveals tonight were a new Storm figure, the Iceman (who showed up in a case pack), and a Mr. Sinister vs. Gambit 2-pack.  All in all, some great reveals tonight, check them out (as well as the first movie Spider-Man figure) in the gallery below.

Thor wave 2 appearing at Target

July 12th, 2011 MattG Posted in Marvel, News No Comments »

Iwasn’t fully convinced there was more than 1 wave of Thor figures planned, but over the weekend, I found wave 2 at a local Target – and grabbed the Warriors 3. Then on Sunday, I found a 2nd Target that had wave 2.  One Monday, I found a 3rd.  If you’re hoping to find anything past the first wave, be sure to keep any eye on your Target…happy hunting!
