Last week I was surprised by an awesome box from Hasbro containing some early samples of upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction toys. In this post I’ll be looking at the Voyager class Grimlock figure. In my previous post, I already ranted about how much I love the unified look of the packaging, so I’ll spare you here…but it’s still great. Per the packaging, Grimlock has an 18 step Transformation. Now let’s get on to everyone’s favorite Transforming T-Rex.
Grimlock
Package Bio: GRIMLOCK is the ultimate wildcard. The DINOBOT leader has the power to decided the fate of Earth almost singlehandedly. His ferocious strength make him a devastating force in battle. If that strength can be focused and harnessed for good, it could turn the tide. If not, it might be what seals Earth’s doom.
I’m not going to rehash everything I said in the Drift/Slag review, but the points I made about the benefits of the simplified transformations apply to Grimlock also. He also passed the “no instructions” test; the Transformation was, as expected, more difficult for this Voyager class Transformer than the Deluxes.
Grimlock’s robot mode is excellent, afterall he has T-Rex skull shoulder pads! Grimlock has enough joints to be able to strike some really cool poses, particularly with his large mace weapon. The T-Rex mode has some good features, but isn’t as impressive as the robot mode. I do like how there is a lever to activate Grimlock’s dino-jaw and how well the mace accessory becomes part of the tail. I do not like the way the chest / dino-arms look – they just seem a bit disconnected from the rest of the body.
Dinobots are always a hit, and Transformers: Age of Extinction Voyager Grimlock is a very solid and fun Transformer. While the T-Rex mode is the weaker of the two, the robot mode more than compensates. You’ll be able to pick up your own Grimlock this May 17th as the toys for the film are released. Thanks to Hasbro and Hunter PR for this opportunity to get a sneak peak at what’s on the way!
