Online fandom today received semi-shocking news, effective immediately Wizard and ToyFare magazines were no more. The parent company Wizard World, Inc announced they would be launching an online venture “Wizard World” in February. Additionally; they announced they’re going to become a publicly traded company. It is expected that the Wizard conventions will also remain intact.
While the news that the magazines have shuttered isn’t terribly surprising, reports fill the media about the difficulties faced by print magazines, it is surprising that they would announce their intentions of becoming a publicly traded company on the same day they stop production of their current products. I’m no business executive, but I would a better transition would have been to better establish their on-line component before ceasing print operations. But I’m just a toy blogger, so what do I know about the world of print media.
