What’s new in horror action figures?

With Halloween just days away, I thought it’d be a great time to look at some new releases of Halloween / Horror action figures.

Let’s start off with the early, classic monsters.  Diamond Select Toys has a new line of Universal Monsters 7″ figures.  These are easily the best plastic renditions of these monsters since Sideshow Toys’ line in the early 2000s.  The current set of releases include ‘The Wolfman‘, ‘The Mummy‘ and ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon‘.  I picked up the Creature at Toys R Us earlier this week, and it makes a great display piece, but it does have limited articulation.  There are also alternate exclusive versions available at Entertainment Earth, the Creature includes a different base, the Mummy includes a sarcophagus, and the Wolfman is available in black and white.

The Exorcist Possessed Regan Electronic Figure Boxed Set Modern horror films are also strongly represented in the toy aisles.  From the 1980 classic film ‘The Exorcist’ NECA toys recreates one of the scariest scenes from the movie, the bedroom scene with the possessed Regan.  This piece is incredible – NECA toys did great work on this on.  Not only does this toy have a great sculpt and good detailing, it also features music from the film and motorized action (Regan’s head spins 360°).  I just love the work they did on this one, you can pick this piece up from Entertainment Earth.

The Exorcist isn’t the only 80s horror property with toys out there.  My personal favorite horror film is ‘Halloween’, and its been quite some time since McFarlane Toy’s Movie Maniac line, but MEZCO comes through with a modern Michael Myers figure.  Rounding out the 80’s horror triplets are NECA Toys’ Freddy Krueger figure, and MEZCO’s Jason Vorhees.

In this post I’ve just scratched the surface of what’s out there, there’s tons of product out there to fit every niche ranging from  Universal Monsters mini-mates to horror bobble heads, Saw toys and more.  If you’ve got a favorite Halloween / Horror toy, leave a comment!
