The Playmates TMNT panel at SDCC started with a brief sizzle reel highlighting many of the many figures from the line’s long history. The panel includes Jeff Torjan, Karl Aaronian, Pat Linden, Chris Kay, John Stelzner, Ray Geiman.
The panel kicked off which a quick history lesson. 1984 Eastman and Laird published TMNT, a 40 page book. 1987, Playmates became the master toy liscensee. In December 1987, a 5-part miniseries broadcast on syndicated TV. In 1988, the toy line shipped in June…only to Toys R Us. The show quickly became #1. 1990, the TMNT movie hit theaters, setting an all time box office for an independant film. 70 million pieces of action figures were sold in the US. 1991, and 1993 had two the two movie sequels.
In 2003 the series returned, 2007 premiered a CG animated movie and 2009 is when TMNT IP moved from Mirage Studios to Viacom.
The line relaunced in July 2012.
