One was a Soviet cosmonaut, selected from among more than 400 applicants to soar into space on the Vostok 6 mission on June 16, 1963. Twenty years and two days later – on June 18, 1983 – an American astronaut rose to similar heights of fame aboard the space shuttle Challenger. They were, respectively, Valentina Tereshkova and Sally Ride. The course they charted for women — in their own countries and
around the world — continues to resonate throughout the cosmos.
