This year’s SDCC debut from Underground Toys was Ace, the 7th Doctor’s young companion. Ace’s meeting of the Doctor on Iceworld was no (spoiler alert!) random event, and her joining the Doctor set the series up for several of my favorite episodes. Ace is now available at your favorite shop to pick up Doctor Who figures. Based on her appearance in ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’, she includes a removeable jacket, spare set of arms, a backpack, a rocket launcher, a baseball bat and several cans of nitro-9 (her explosive of choice).
Underground Toys should get an award for Ace – she’s essentially perfect. The sculpt is excellent, the deco is insanely good…I mean, the badges on her coat are super detailed – even the Blue Peter badge! The articulation is good (neck, shoulders, bicep, elbow, wrist, waist, hips, knees) and her accessories are perfect. The baseball bat and nitro-9 do fit in the backpack, which has a removable panel allowing you to store these items in there. Ace with the backpack on and the bat sticking out, is essentially action figure perfection.
Since I don’t have anything negative to say about Ace, I’ll have to settle for this being a short review. Thinking ahead to the eventual repaint the obvious and easiest would be to give her a boombox and pair her with a Cyberman – a quick an easy “Silver Nemesis” two-pack. What I’d prefer to see for Ace, but would essential be a complete new figure, would be for a ‘Curse of Fenric’ Ace. I’d certainly be left writing another rave review.
