DVD Review – Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol 2

The Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Volume 2 DVD and Blu-Ray set is due to hit stores this Tuesday, October 16th. This compilation features 50 cartoon shorts, all that have been remastered and carefully restored. Disk one features 25 signature shorts featuring all you’re WB favorites – Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd; they’re all here. The second disc also has 25 shorts, featuring a fan’s choice selection (“Wabbit Twouble”), several complete collections for some more obscure characters, and several classic one-shots. The third disc, available only with the Blu-Ray release is packed with hours of documentaries and lost cartoons from WWII. The DVD set has an SRP $26.99 and the Blu-Ray is priced at $44.98.

For the past few days I’ve been watching the Blu-Ray edition, and it’s gorgeous. I’ve spent most of my time on the first disc with the shorts. Growing up, the Looney Tunes shorts were a television staple; so watching this release was like visiting an old friend. But in this case, the friend has never looked better – the restoration job done on these shorts is nothing short of incredible. The colors are vivid, the picture is sharp, the sound is clear – this shorts are beautiful. The selection of shorts is also fantastic, while watching there were some which immediately jumped out as ones I vividly recalled and others were long forgotten or entirely new to me. The accompanying booklet provides a quick synopsis and facts on each short – very handy if you’re looking for a specific short in the set. I haven’t spent much time with the special features yet, but at the top of my list are the ‘Private Snafu’ shorts – the ‘lost’ cartoons from WWII.

If you’re old enough to remember watching Looney Tunes on TV, then you should consider grabbing this set; you’ll love reuniting with these shorts. One of the great things about this set is you can spend 10 minutes and watch one short, or you can spend hours exploring the bonus content or listening to commentary. If you’re mostly interested in watching the shorts – grab the DVD, but if you’re a fan of classic animation you have to grab the Blu-Ray – the third disc of bonus content has things that even the biggest fans haven’t seen. This set is highly recommended!

Thanks to The Lippin Group and Warner Brothers Home Entertainment for providing the review copy of Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 2.
