AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #10 – everyone else!

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. With 9 days behind us, I’ve still got some really great suggestions for holiday gifts – we’ll see how many of them I can get through.

For awesome vintage style tees across a wide range of properties – check out Junk Food tees. This is my favorite t-shirt brand, with most of my Star Wars and Marvel tees being Junk Food tees. I love them, high quality, vintage styled graphics on fantastically soft shirts. I always believe you can’t have too many nice t-shirts or sneakers!

Maybe you know someone who is a fan of ‘The Walking Dead’?  Funko’s Pop! vinyl Walking Dead figures are a delicious mixture of cute and zombies, which goes together better than you’d think.

Got a Power Rangers fan in your life that you like a whole lot? Consider the huge 338 episode, 40 DVD box set from Time-Life and Shout! Factory. This set covers the first seven seasons of the show, from Might Morphin Power Rangers through Lost Galaxy. If that’s a bit pricey, first first season is available from Shout! Factory in two sets (part one, part two).

Back to more Zombies, but with a holiday twist. Jakks Pacific’s line of S.L.U.G. Zombies have four special holiday themed packs. Priced at about $4 a pack, these make great little stocking stuffers. Who wouldn’t love to find a zombie Snowman on Christmas morning? These have been showing up at Target’s throughout the country.

Maybe you’re shopping for someone stuck in the past, and they’re hooked on vintage toys. In this case, you should check out the offerings of Will’s World of Wonder, Dinosaur Toy Vault and Nerd Rage Toys. All three are smaller online shops, each with some awesome product. They’re good folks to boot!

None of this sound like it’s going to work? Then two choices left – either get yourself something, or go for a gift card! Merry Christmas!

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #9 – the Whovian

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. Today’s theme provides gift options for the whovian in your life. Having just celebrated it’s 49th anniversary, Doctor Who is set to have a huge year next year, and with the popularity of the new series, there is more Doctor Who gift options then ever!

Starting with the fun stuff, I can strongly recommend the newest classic figure set – from an AwesomeToyBlog favorite episode comes the Pyramid of Mars collectors set. Featuring the episode’s villian Suhtekh and two Guardian Mummies this set will bring a smile to any classic Who fan. Or maybe some talking Daleks would be more their speed. Nothing says Christmas better than the gift of a Dalek, much less on that threatens your with Extermination!

My next recommendation is perfect for when the family is full of Who fans. From USAopoly came Doctor Who themed versions of Monopoly and Yahtzee. The Doctor Who Monopoly board features Doctor Who ‘street names’ and game pieces of iconic Doctor Who lore including the 4th Doctor’s scarf, and the 7th Doctor’s question mark umbrella. The Yahtzee game is gorgeous as packaged, proudly displaying a TARDIS shaped dice cup, which I think is fantastic!

Maybe your Who fan wants to express their fandom in a more practical manner. To these ends I suggest either a TARDIS waste bin or ice bucket from Underground Toys.  Another practical gift suggestion is Bif Bang Pow!’s TARDIS themed aluminum water bottle or insulated mug, both perfect for one’s commute.

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #8 – the Gamer

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. In today’s environment, video games and toys cross-pollinate so much that it seems natrual to focus one entry of the gift guide on video game related product.

No post about video games on an action figure website can not recommend Skylanders: Giants. This franchise allows you to unlock new characters in the game by placing an action figure on the ‘portal’ bringing the character into your game. It’s a brilliant blend of video gaming and action figure collecting. And it’s fun. The first Skylanders game was huge last year, so I expect big things out of Skylanders: Giants.

NECA has the perfect gift for fans of the puzzler Portal, with their prop replica Aperature Labs Portal gun. This customizable gun is straight out of the game and features sounds and light – the only thing this doesn’t do is actually create portals through space. The level of attention and detail that NECA’s poured into this piece (and frankly all their product) is indescribable, it’s simply awesome.

My third and final suggestion applies to fans of Microsoft’s HALO franchise, who may want to enjoy the franchise when they’re away from their X-Box. Mega Blok’s construction sets make this possible and their suitable for someone looking to play with their toys or someone looking to have a great piece for display. Sets are available at a wide range of price points from a single blind bagged figure for around $5 on up. One of my favorite sets is the UNSC Rockethog vs. Anti-aircraft Gun as it has everything you need (good guys, bad guys, a playset and a vehicle) for some good ole fashioned play. Amazon has a wide range of other sets available as well, check them out.

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #7 – the Star Wars fan

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. Today we’re looking at gifts for the Star Wars fan in your life, which can be a challenging task since there’s just so much Star Wars merchandise out there. With any luck these suggestions will be something new.

First up is the latest entry into the Angry Birds franchise, Angry Birds Star Wars. Scoff all you want, but the game is really quite fun. An iTunes or Amazon App Store gift card (so they can buy the app) coupled with the ‘Angry Birds Star Wars Early Bird Kit‘ would be a great entry point to the game. The homage to the original Star Wars Early Bird kit will be appreciated by any long time Star Wars fan.

My next entry can be found in the holiday section at your local Target store, where you can find Funko’s holiday themed Star Wars Wacky Wobblers. With three different characters available, each one of these 6 inch bobble heads takes one of your favorite Star Wars characters and puts a Christmas twist on them. Priced at just $4.99 each – these are a steal!

I’m still a huge fan of my Han Solo in Carbonite ice mold from Kotobukiya – you can make ice (obviously), chocolates, soaps and more. These are fantastic. If you decide to pick these up, I’d highly recommend gifting at least a pair of them…you can make stuff much quicker when you have more than one mold. The Han Solo is my favorite, but Kotobukiya also offers R2-D2, X-Wing fighters and more designs.

My final recommendation for today’s gift guide is only available at Toys R Us and is a bit on the pricey side, but it’s amazing. Toys R Us currently has an exclusive ‘vintage’ Millennium Falcon. The toy is a reissue of 2009’s “big” Millennium Falcon, however this release comes in a box that is a recreation of the original Falcon’s vintage box. For an older fan, the package itself will bring back memories – and if they don’t have the Falcon already, they’ll be gaining a fantastic toy. Every time I go to Toys R Us and see this huge box on the shelf, it brings a smile to my face.

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #6 – the James Bond fan

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. The latest cinematic James Bond aventure Skyfall just hit  theaters earlier this month and it seems appropriate to put some attention on fans of the James Bond franchise, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The most obvious gift recommendation is the new 23 disk movie Blu-ray collection. This new box set includes all of Bond’s adventures through Quantum of Solace as well as special, exclusive bonus content. It’s gorgeous.

Maybe your Bond fan would rather experience a classic James Bond adventure instead of watching one. To those ends, Activison’s ‘007 Legends‘ should fit the bill. Featuring 5 missions inspired by classic James Bond missions, you’ll travel to exotic locations and foil the plans of some of bonds most iconic villains.  You can even experience the latest bond movie Skyfall, via DLC.

If your Bond fan always roots for the underdog, hoping that Bond fails in his mission, then Factory Entertainment’s prop replica SPECTRE ring may be the perfect gift. I like this piece from Factory Entertainment for a few reasons, it is a gorgeous screen accurate prop replica and it is a subtle way to express a persons love for the franchise. While it may be a bit of a splurge, it is fantastic and would make an amazing gift.

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #5 – the Marvel fan

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. Fans of Marvel comics have had an incredible year, so choosing gifts for today’s theme was tough.

My first Marvelicious recommendation is pretty straightforward – an Avengers gift pack. It was the superhero movie of the year, so this was a no brainer. I’d suggest a copy of the movie and then a few Hasbro figures, and a Helicarrier. That’s right, the mobile, flying, S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters can be yours – it even includes a Captain America.  If the Helicarrier is out of the budget, then go for the Quinjet – but if you’re a Costco member, pick it up there, they have an exclusive version that has different colorings and includes two figures.

If there person you’re shopping for has high-end tastes, then I can suggest either Sideshow’s  Hot Toys ‘Rescue Captain America‘ or the standard Captain America from “Captain America: The First Avenger”. All Hot Toy releases have amazing likeness and quality, and both of these figures are no exception, looking like they were plucked right out of the Captain America film – simply gorgeous. I drooled over the Rescue Cap figure at SDCC and I know I’d love to find either of these under my tree.

For fans who want to own a piece of ‘The Avengers’ movie – eFX has the perfect gift, having released a replica of Agent Coulson’s Captain America trading cards. You actually get two complete sets of cards – one near mint and the other bloodied. Priced at just $40 for the set, this is a fantastic gift for someone who is a huge Agent Coulson fan or just loved the movie.

None of these sound good? Well then, how about a gift subscription to Marvel’s Unlimited Digital subscription? They’ll get access to over 10,000 comics for just $60 a year. You can sign up for a gift subscription here on Marvel.com.

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #4 – the Transformers fan

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. Today I’ll be providing some recommendations for the Transformers fan in your life, these will be robots in disguise as fantastic presents.

One of my favorite Hasbro toy releases for the year is the new, limited edition, G2 coloring of the Fall of Cybertron Bruticus figure. Based on the character’s appearance in this year’s massively huge video game, Fall of Cybertron, this gift set includes all five Combaticons with color schemes inspired by the early 1990 ‘G2 Transformers’. This set is a shared exclusive meaning you can order either from Amazon or Big Bad Toy Store – both establishments are charging $59.99.

Maybe the Transformers fan in your life is a G1 purist – and only want things just as they were in the 80s, if that’s the case, I want to recommend the newest addition to the Transformers: Masterpiece line – Sideswipe. This highly detailed Transformers collectible, looks like he stepped out of the cartoon, is a little expensive as he’s a Japanese import. But once he’s in the hands of a Transformers fan, they’ll be grinning ear to ear. He’s an amazing toy, nearly perfect. This is one piece that I picked up myself and love! You can grab him at various Transformers shops on-line, including Big Bad Toy Store.

My final Transformers recommendation is something for the fan of the 80’s animated series, and while those episodes have been available on DVD a few times over the past few years, Shout Factory! has been doing an incredible job releasing DVD sets of the series that follow up the original show in Japan. Each of these three sets; Headmasters, Victory and Super God Masterforce, feature the original Japanese language tracks with English subtitles.  Priced around $20 for each set, they’re a steal – many fans have never seen these shows, much less the completed sets. Shout Factory! does a great job and these are awesome releases!

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #3 – Masters of the Universe

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. With the celebration of their 30th Anniversary in 2012, it seems only appropriate that we include He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in our gift guide. And while any of the figures on MattyCollector.com make great gifts, we’ll be going a little outside the Mattel figures for our recommendations.

My first choice would be from the fine folks at Icon Heroes who really turned it out this year. Perfectly suited to the He-Fan who’s a professional, the Power Sword letter opener($19.99)  is the perfect gift, assuming you can restrain yourself from shouting that you ‘have the power’ each time you open an envelope. Pair that with the Castle Grayskull business card holder ($34.99), you have the perfect desk suite. The letter opener was hot, hot, hot at SDCC!

My second recommendation is from the folks at Popfun – whose Toon Tumblers are fantastic glasses! They’ve recently released a set of 4 Masters of the Universe tumblers featuring He-Man, Skeletor, Teela and Beast Man. These are high quality glasses, the printed art work isn’t going anywhere on these. Priced at $40 for the set, they’re available now.

If you’re looking for a stocking stuffer – you should consider the Masters of the Universe Wacky Wobblers from Funko. They’re slated for release just before Christmas, so delivery may be tight, but they’re awesome. A fresh and fun take on the characters, available characters include He-Man, Skeletor, Orko and Beast Man.

My final gift suggestion for the He-Fan is the 30th Anniversary limited edition DVD box set. Being released by Mill Creek Entertainment the 18th of December, this 22 disc collections contains 189 episodes of Masters of the Universe goodness. The episodes include the complete runs of both the 80’s and 2000’s  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series. Also included are the 20 fan favorite episodes of  ‘The New Adventures of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’. Mill Creek does a fantastic job with their boxsets and I expect this to be an A+ release.

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide Day #2 – the Reader

With the holiday season now upon us, it can be difficult to find the right gifts for the fan in your life. Now in it’s second year, the AwesomeToyBlog Awesome Holiday Gift Guide is my opportunity to spotlight some fantastic products that make perfect gifts. Today we’re looking at some action figure themed books for the reader in your life.

If you have a Star Wars fan in your life, the Star Wars: The Ultimate Action Figure Collection book is perfect – it’s brand new, so it’s the most up to date reference guide and they’re sure to not have it. The book also features contributions by two prominent online contributors – Dan Curto and Paul Harrison. If I didn’t already have this book on order, I’d love to find it under the tree.

My second book recommendation is for fans of Funko’s awesome Pop! vinyl line – the World of Pop! book. I’ve been a fan of the line since I saw that first Batman, and picked up this book as early as I could at SDCC. Featuring gorgeous, full page, photography – this book documents the first few years of the line including all the retired and chase figures. Even if you’re not sure the person you’re shopping for is a Pop! fan – if they like Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, or toy photography – they’ll love this book.

My final book recommendation is a fantastic collection of Action Figure photography – Art-Toys by Brian McCarty. As someone who dabbles in action figure photography, I love to see other people’s images and having it in a coffee table book is just so posh. The back of the book features a thorough ‘behind-the-scenes’ section so you can see all the work that goes into setting up these amazing photos. You might even pick up a few new tricks!

AwesomeToyBlog’s Holiday Gift Guide – Day 5 – the Star Wars fan

Now that the holiday season is upon us, it’s time to pick up gifts for your favorite people. But, from time to time, your favorite geek/nerd/toy collector can sometimes pose a bit of a challenge. To help you out, I’ve put together the AwesomeToyBlog holiday gift guide. Ten products, each addressing a niche in the fandom, one each day. Up today is the perfect gift for the Star Wars fan who’s a kid or a kid at heart.

One of my favorite Star Wars items I own is my Darth Vader ForceFX lightsaber; but frankly, I get nervous playing with it.  Who wants to break a $100 lightsaber on a ceiling fan?  That’s no longer a concern thanks to the folks at Hasbro who introduced the Ultimate FX lightsabers – these featuring the same led blade ignition effect as the Force FX sabers, same quality sound effects, same awesome fun but at a significantly lower price point.  You can pick these sabers up at Target, Wal-Mart, Entertainment Earth, Amazon – all for about $30 to $35 – maybe less with all the holiday sales that are bound to be on the way.  No Star Wars fan would be unhappy with one of these awesome lightsabers. In fact, feel free to send me one!
