“When we realized that the creators of the safety short Shake Hands with Danger had done a spooky feature film we knew we had to have it. How can you pass up the story of a church organist who moves to Utah – on purpose, mind you – only to get fired from her church organist position? It’s bone chilling. And a perfect RiffTrax for Halloween!” Michael J. Nelson of RiffTrax said.
When young Mary survives a horrible car crash in Kansas, she tries to start her life over with a new job in a small Utah town. Along the way, she’s haunted by a gaunt pale figure in a nice suit who leads her to an abandoned carnival pavilion on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Soon, Mary doesn’t know if she’s awake or dreaming, alive or dead. Weird, creepy and very silly, Carnival of Souls, as riffed by the Rifftrax crew, is the perfect Halloween treat.

Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks Heading To Theaters for One Night Only – November 14th

Doctor Who logoBBC AMERICA and Fathom Events announced today a one-night special theatrical screening event of Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks animated series on Monday, November 14, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. local time – 50 years after the original BBC broadcast – in advance of the premiere on BBC AMERICA on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 8:25pm ET. The cinema event will also feature exclusive bonus content including interviews with members of the original cast.

Tickets for Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks in cinemas can be purchased online beginning Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10am ET by visiting www.FathomEvents.com, or at participating theater box offices. Fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network. The Power of the Daleks is one of the most celebrated Doctor Who adventures, and yet no complete film recordings are known to have survived. The master negatives were destroyed in an archive purge in 1974. This brand new animation, being released 50 years after its only UK broadcast, is based on the program’s original audio recordings, surviving photographs, and film clips.  The six-part adventure features the regeneration – or as it was then called “renewal” – of First Doctor, William Hartnell, into Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, and follows the Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) as they do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.

“Ahead of the premiere on BBC AMERICA, it is a rare treat to be able to bring the lost episode, Power of the Daleks, to life using modern animation techniques. Doctor Who cinema events have been incredibly successful, and this is extraordinary opportunity to allow a new generation of fans the opportunity to experience this classic adventure for the first time,” said Soumya Sriraman, EVP, Franchise and Digital Enterprises, BBC Worldwide North America.

“We’re pleased to continue our long-standing and successful partnership with BBC AMERICA to bring more fantastic Doctor Who content to the big screen,” said Fathom Events Vice President of Programming Kymberli Frueh. “The Whovians are always one of our biggest and most passionate groups of fans at the cinemas.”

Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks is produced and directed by Charles Norton, with character designs from acclaimed comic book artists Martin Geraghty and Adrian Salmon.

Since its launch in 1963, Doctor Who has become one of the world’s best loved dramas and is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful sci-fi series ever.  Doctor Who is BBC AMERICA’s highest-rated series and has received numerous awards across its 53 years. The series set new records in 2013 with a global simulcast event of the 50th anniversary special on television and in theaters, in partnership with Fathom Events in the U.S. Doctor Who returns with a Christmas Special in December and new season in Spring 2017 on BBC AMERICA

fathom tn “Here, lizard lizard lizard!” Size does matter as the stars of Rifftrax are set to bring larger-than-life laughs nationwide as they riff on one of the most frequently requested titles in RiffTrax history, “Godzilla.” Thanks to a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that raised money to license a “big” Hollywood title, the RiffTrax crew – Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett (best known for the groundbreaking “Mystery Science Theater 3000”) – are back again this summer with a riotous never-before-seen take on the ‘90s creature feature. Presented by Fathom Events, RiffTrax and IGN, RiffTrax Live: Godzilla will be broadcast LIVE to select movie theaters nationwide on Thursday, August 14, at 8:00 p.m. ET7:00 p.m. CT and tape-delayed to 7:00 p.m. MT8:00 p.m. PT, with a second showing on Tuesday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

“Thanks to our many Kickstarter contributors we’re happy to be able to do the best giant lizard movie of the late 90’s!” said Michael J. Nelson of RiffTrax. “Because everything about it is big, we pledge to supersize the laughs as well.”
One of the most frequently requested titles in RiffTrax history, the 1998 daikaiju flick “Godzilla” was reimagined from the popular Japanese film of the same name but with bigger, better visual effects. The plot revolves around a giant reptilian monster, mutated by nuclear tests in French Polynesia, that makes its way north to nest its young and begins wreaking havoc on New York City. Directed by Roland Emmerich with screenplay by Dean Devlin and Emmerich, the film stars Matthew Broderick (Dr. Niko Tatopoulos), Maria Pitillo (Audrey Timmonds), Hank Azaria (Victor ‘Animal’ Palotti), Kevin Dunn (Colonel Hicks), Jean Reno (Philippe Roaché) and the Taco Bell Chihuahua…?!
“The RiffTrax crew has kept Fathom audiences in stitches thanks to their comedic genius and quick wit,” said Shelly Maxwell, executive vice president of Fathom Events. “‘RiffTrax Live: Godzilla’ is the perfect match for another night of monstrous laughs in theaters nationwide.”

Event Review – Fathom’s Star Trek: the Next Generation screening

Last night I had the opportunity to attend Fathom Event’s Star Trek: the Next Generation screening. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary (and Blu-Ray release of season 1) of Star Trek: the Next Generation theaters hosted a screening of two episodes, ‘Where No One Has Gone Before’ and ‘Datalore’. Between the episodes a featurette (which is on the Blu-Ray release) which discussed the return of Star Trek in 1987 and the screening  wrapped with a preview of the season 2 Blu-Ray release.

I have to admit, I didn’t pick up the Blu-Ray preview disc, so I was going into this event with just some screen caps featured on a few websites  and some youtube trailers. Ultimately I’m glad I went into the theater with limited exposure to the remastering of these episodes to HD, as I was blown away by how amazing these episodes looked. Unlike the updates made to the Original Series (which I also enjoyed) when it was converted to HD, the upgraded visuals looked right and didn’t make you go – “wow that’s new”. ‘Where No One Has Gone Before’ was a fantastic choice of episodes for this screening as the visuals of the outer rim of the universe looked amazing in HD – very crisp, very bright. Regarding revisions, the crystalline entity in ‘Datalore’ was a new 3D-model, but the new model was very true to the source material, which should make purists happy.

This screening event was a fantastic two and a half hours, and as I was walking out I was thinking that I wouldn’t mind owning the season 1 Blu-Ray set (available today!).  Thanks to Fathom for providing this opportunity, if there’s another event and you’re a Star Trek fan; be sure you jump on it!
