January’s New Announcments from Kotobukiya: Marvel, Star Wars, DC, Resident Evil

Kotobukiya today sent over a batch of pictures of new products that are coming later this year.  Keep scrolling for full details and images of the Ikeman Red Hood statue, the Black Panther movie ArtFX statue, Defenders Luke Cage ArtFX satue, the Resident Evil Chris Redfield ArtFX, and the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Praetorian Guard ArtFX+ statues.

DC COMICS RED HOOD IKEMEN STATUE WITH BONUS PART
A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import!  Kotobukiya is branching out into an all new statue concept with IKEMEN. Similar to the popular Bishoujo series, this fantastic expansion is a lineup of popular characters re-designed by the famous Japanese illustrator Ricken in the Japanese Ikemen (“handsome men”) style.
Following up after the debut Nightwing is a true bad boy in the Batman Family, RED HOOD! After Dick Grayson left Bruce Wayne’s side to branch out on his own, Batman needed a new sidekick and found the young hoodlum Jason Todd to be his replacement. Todd excelled as Robin but had a violent edge, and the boy unfortunately met his end at the hands of the Joker. Even death can’t keep a good character down, and Jason returned to life and became the anti-hero known as Red Hood, who takes his place as the second Ikemen style hunk with a special first edition with bonus part!
Jason Todd has always been a rebel, and here he stands in a defiant pose just begging you to look at him. As Red Hood he wears a super cool (and intricately sculpted) costume with black boots, reinforced black trousers, an armored black shirt decorated with a red bat logo, and a brown leather jacket with red accents and silver zippers. Of course, he wouldn’t be in the Ikemen style unless his pose and outfit highlighted Jason’s slim but muscular physique, and as Red Hood stands with one leg extended and one hand behind his head he shows off his toned body. The dark hero comes with interchangeable heads so you can customize your display: a full Red Hood helmet, a bare head revealing an aloof expression on his face and his black hair with a white streak, and exclusive to this first edition a bonus head wearing a sleek red domino mask! Sculpted by the talented Naoya Muto, Red Hood stands in 1/7 scale. Add this handsome hero to your collection and be on the lookout for more upcoming Ikemen Statues from Kotobukiya like Red Robin!

MARVEL THE DEFENDERS SERIES LUKE CAGE ARTFX+ STATUE
A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import!  Kotobukiya’s Marvel Comics ARTFX+ Statues have brought you Avengers, X-Men, and most recently Spider-Man and characters from his world, but now we turn our attention to the street-level heroes of the Defenders. Next up in the quartet is the man with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin, LUKE CAGE! Born Carl Lucas, the hero first appeared in 1972 and was a prisoner convicted for a crime he did not commit. An experiment gave him his superpowers, and he set off on a literal career of heroism as a “Hero for Hire.” Luke Cage has had his big moments, even joining the Avengers and getting his own series on Netflix, and now he powers into the ARTFX+ Statue lineup in a tremendous way based on concept art by Dale Keown!

Criminals better watch out, because Luke Cage is on the case! The hero for hire stands ready to dish out justice as only he can, standing in a slight crouch with his legs spread for balance. Luke leans forward slightly and menacingly, with his arms hanging down and ready for action. The Defender is massively muscled and his superhuman physique shows through his casual white t-shirt and blue jeans which he wears with black boots and a belt with a gold “C” logo buckle. Luke also wears big golden bracelets and carries two lengths of chains that evoke the image of his costume from his days as Power Man! His clenched teeth and scowl are enough to intimidate any criminal, and he looks like he just stepped right out of a comic book. Sculpted by Junnosuke Abe (RESTORE), the master behind all of the Marvel ARTFX+ releases, Luke Cage stands 7 ½ inches tall (1/10 th scale) with magnets in his feet providing perfect stability on the included display base. Add this warrior for justice to your display and pair him with other Defenders ARTFX+ Statues Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist!

MARVEL BLACK PANTHER MOVIE BLACK PANTHER ARTFX STATUE
A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import!  Kotobukiya’s next elite ARTFX Statue returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and celebrates the breakout hero of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and the star of his own upcoming blockbuster, BLACK PANTHER! A prince of the mysterious nation Wakanda, T’Challa was thrust into the spotlight when a terrorist attack killed his father and elevated him to the throne. Now he holds the dual responsibility of ruling his people as king and protecting the world as the costumed Black Panther, and it’s that hero who claws his way to you now in a glorious 1/6 scale statue representing 2018’s Black Panther film!

A hero unlike any other in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther stalks his prey across ancient Wakandan ruins and will never let his target escape. T’Challa is frozen in place as he steps lightly over the rubble, using his feline grace to move silently and quickly. Enhanced with cutting edge vibranium technology, Black Panther’s incredibly detailed black body suit combines a subtle texture with reinforced sections and decorative silver elements, not to mention wicked claws that can slice through nearly anything. The suit highlights the hero’s muscular physique and his tensed pose as he prepares for action. It also extends over Black Panther’s head with its menacing feline face plate and subtle “ear” protrusions to complete the overall look. Black Panther stands over 12 ½ inches tall (1/6th scale) atop his Wakandan jungle ruins base. Get your hands on this technologically advanced hero and star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

RESIDENT EVIL: VENDETTA CHRIS REDFIELD ARTFX STATUE
A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import!  The Resident Evil franchise has been scaring fans around the world for over 20 years, first with a long series of video games and then with other spinoff media. Kotobukiya is proud to partner with Capcom and present all new ARTFX Statues from the recently released 3D animated film Resident Evil: Vendetta, and after Leon S. Kennedy comes the other main protagonist CHRIS REDFIELD! Originally a Special Tactics and Rescue Service (STARS) officer of the Raccoon City police when he made his debut in the original Resident Evil game, Chris went on to become a Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) agent and in Vendetta joined fellow survivors Leon Kennedy and Rebecca Chambers in trying to take down the criminal “death merchant” Glenn Arias in New York City. Now you can take home this tough guy hero in a dynamic new 1/6 scale ARTFX Statue presentation!

Capturing the BSAA Silver Dagger captain as he appears in the opening sequence of the film, Chris stalks the battlefield peering down the scope of his M4A1 Assault Carbine, ready to take the killing shot. He is heavily armored, unlike his partner Leon, wearing heavy-duty B.O.W. combat gear consisting of armor plates, holsters, and a tactical belt over drab fatigues. Chris is covered in extra ammo and equipment like a pistol, knife, walkie talkie, and more, and on his arm is the Silver Dagger counterterrorism unit emblem patch. His pose is all business, with feet spread wide for balance as he fires his weapon two-handed. Captain Redfield stares down his target with an extremely focused expression on his face, his short-shorn hair never getting in the way of taking his shot. Sculpted by M.I.C., Chris Redfield stands nearly 11 ½ inches tall (1/6 scale) atop a specially designed Resident Evil display base resembling the villa floor from a key rescue mission, and around his feet are empty magazines, cartridges, and blood spray. Display Chris by himself or alongside his Vendetta ally Leon S. Kennedy!

Landmark 1,000th Issue Features Jim Lee Cover Revealing New Costume

DC is going all-out to celebrate the one-thousandth issue of ACTION COMICS—the longest continually published comic book of its kind in history, the series that introduced Superman to the world and the title that launched the superhero genre. The Jim Lee-drawn cover features a new costume that integrates a variety of classic and new elements, including the Man of Steel’s trademark red trunks.

“ACTION COMICS #1000 represents a watershed moment in the history of not just comic books, but entertainment, literature and pop culture,” said Lee. “There’s no better way to celebrate Superman’s enduring popularity than to give him a look that combines some new accents with the most iconic feature of his classic design.”

Available at comics retailers and digitally on April 18, ACTION COMICS #1000 features the DC debut of acclaimed writer Brian Michael Bendis in a 10-page Superman story featuring art by DC publisher and celebrated artist Jim Lee. This milestone issue will also include two 15-page stories from two of DC’s current and most popular talent teams: SUPERMAN writer Peter J. Tomasi and artist Pat Gleason, as well as ACTION COMICS writer and artist Dan Jurgens.

“The one-thousandth issue of ACTION COMICS is an incredible milestone in pop culture and a testament to the vision of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster,” said DC publisher Dan DiDio. “Without this book, along with Siegel and Shuster’s fertile imaginations and boundless creativity, the superhero’s place in literature may have been wildly different, if not altogether nonexistent.”

This must-have collector’s item comic book will also feature previously unpublished art from Curt Swan, whose dynamic, iconic style many consider the definitive look for the Man of Steel throughout comics’ Golden and Silver Ages. Acclaimed DC writer Marv Wolfman will script a story based on this never-before-seen content. In addition, the comic will include a collection of memorable bonus stories from some of the most celebrated names in comics and entertainment.

Contributors to this once-in-a-lifetime issue include legendary Superman movie director Richard Donner and New York Times best-selling writer Geoff Johns, with art by Olivier Coipel. Other contributing creative teams will include Paul Dini with José Luis García-López; Tom King with Clay Mann and Jordie Bellaire; Brad Meltzer with John Cassaday and Laura Martin; Louise Simonson with Jerry Ordway; Scott Snyder with Tim Sale and more to be announced. This celebratory comic book is just the beginning; this milestone will be recognized across the DC superhero line for the month of April with a series of Superman-themed variant covers and even more to come. Check out the website at www.dccomics.com or the DC YouTube channel for the latest news regarding Krypton’s last son and his elevation to pop culture icon.

Cryptozoic and Warner Bros. Consumer Products Announce Release of DC Deck-Building Game: Confrontations

Cryptozoic Entertainment, leading creator of board games, trading cards, and collectibles, and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment, today announced the November 29 release of DC Deck-Building Game: Confrontations. In the 2-4 player team vs. team game, each player selects a DC Super Hero (Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or Zatanna) or DC Super-Villain (Lex Luthor, Circe, Ocean Master, or Felix Faust) and joins another player on his or her team for a clash against two opponents. The game uses Cryptozoic’s popular Cerberus Engine, which has players build up their decks with the goal of defeating one of their opponents. The new keyword “Assist” on many cards allows a player to lend some help to his or her teammate. Though standalone, the game can be combined with any of the variations of the DC Deck-Building Game to create an even larger experience.

“While best played as a 2v2, there are 2- and 3-player variant rules,” said Lead Game Designer Matt Hyra. “Players are going to love the competitive nature of trying to take down the biggest names in the DC Universe, no matter how many players are at the table.”

In the game, each player’s DC Super Hero or DC Super-Villain has three unique versions—when one is knocked down by the opposing team, the player replaces it with the next one, which has boosted abilities and is even more difficult to take down. In order to defeat their opponents, players have to work together, taking advantage of cards with the keyword “Assist,” which allows a card to be played during a teammate’s turn and gives that teammate all the benefits.

DC Deck-Building Game: Confrontations will be available at retailers nationwide November 29 for a suggested retail price of $40.

Product Details:
  • Number of players: 2-4
  • Ages: 15+
  • Playtime: 35-75 minutes
  • Designers: Matt Hyra and Nathaniel Yamaguchi
  • Contents Summary:
    • 180 Game Cards
    • 24 Oversized DC Super Heroes and DC Super-Villains
    • 4 Turn Sequence Tokens
    • Rulebook
  • Standalone game, but can be combined with any previous DC Deck-Building Game

About ACTION COMICS 1000

In 1938, two kids from Cleveland, Ohio – Joe Shushter and Jerry Siegel – created a character they thought would represent the best of humanity in a troubled time with few beacons of hope for the future. That character went on to become one of the brightest and most well-known creations in all of pop culture: Superman. And it all began in ACTION COMICS. DC is proud to celebrate the 1000th edition of this seminal title that created the entire superhero genre – bringing joy, hope and inspiration to Superman fans around the world for 80 years.

DC Announces Writers Workshop Class of 2017

DC is ushering in a new class of up-and-coming comic talent with the launch of the 2017 Writers Workshop program, led once again by bestselling writer Scott Snyder. The DC Talent Development team fielded more than a thousand entries again this year, selecting the best of the best among aspiring writers.

Members of the class of 2017 participating in the 13-week program include Sanya Anwar (1001), Ryan Cady (BIG MOOSE), Joey Esposito (PAWN SHOP, CAPTAIN ULTIMATE), Robert Jeffrey (ROUTE 3, RADIO FREE AMERIKA), Phillip Kennedy Johnson (LAST SONS OF AMERICA, WARLORDS OF APPALACHIA), and Magdalene Visaggio (KIM & KIM, QUANTUM TEENS ARE GO).

“We are entering the third year of this program and I’m proud to say this year’s class is another group of top notch, aspiring talent,” stated DC’s Vice President and Executive Editor of Young Reader and Talent Development, Bobbie Chase. “It’s heartening to see past Workshop participants receive regular work at DC and I have no doubt that Scott will empower this new class to be at the forefront of writing great stories for comics.”

Writers Workshop teacher Scott Snyder added, “Teaching this workshop has been one of the real highlights of my time at DC and I can’t wait to get started again. It’s an honor and thrill to work with such inspired, and inspiring talent.”

DC’s Talent Development Workshop began with a pilot session in 2015, and since then the program has resulted in several participants receiving new assignments from DC editorial. For example, the upcoming mini-series BATMAN AND THE SIGNAL will be co-written by ’16 Writers Workshop graduate Tony Patrick, alongside his teacher, Scott Snyder, with art by the acclaimed Cully Hamner. Also, the latest edition of DC’s NEW TALENT SHOWCASE will be released in November and will feature stories from graduates of past DC Writers and Artists Workshops.
