Figure Spotlight: Bombshock with Combaticons

Bombshell with Combaticons

Series: Transformers: Power Core Combiners

Release Date: 7/2010

Power Core Combiners is one of the new themes running through Transformers which borrows heavily on past “gimmicks”.  Take a bit of ‘Scramble City’ combiners, a bit of Micromasters, a bit of Energon Optimus Prime and a bit of minicons and you get Power Core Combiners.   You have one central Transformer (in this case) Bombshock and 4 vehicle drones which can combine to form a larger robot; Bombshock as the core and the drones as the limbs.  The system is very interchangeable with the ability to swap out the core robot or use drones from different sets.  Its a great concept with a ton of flexibility and opportunities for fun.  Keep reading for my detailed thoughts and some pictures!

New Kabaya candy Transformers

August 23rd, 2010 MattG Posted in News, Transformers | No Comments »

A second set of G1 inspired Kabaya candy toys have been announced for release in Japan.  This set features a small Ultra Magnus, Prowl, and Jetfire.  A picture of the trio is after the jump.  These figures are slated for a September 29th release.

If you’re not familiar with Kabaya candy toys; they are simplified snap-together kits of Transformers that come packaged with a very poor tasting stick of gum (similar to the gum included with baseball cards).  These figures are typically quite small, but not Worlds-Smallest-Transformers small.

Dapol Doctor Who toy catalog from 1990/1991

August 20th, 2010 MattG Posted in Doctor Who | 3 Comments »

Doctor Who logoBack in the late 1980′s to 2001 there was a fairly successful Doctor Who action figure line from the British toy train company Dapol.  A member of the WhoNA message board posted a toy catalog from 1987 featuring the toys including a never released Whomobile.  Check out the prototype image after the jump; or head here to check out the entire catalog.  As a young toy collecting Whovian, these Dapol figures were incredible.  The TARDIS console playset and clear Dalek are two of my personal “holy grail” items.  While the Dapol figures can’t hold up to today’s great Underground Toys classic Who line; this catalog takes me back to watching PBS on a Saturday afternoon and following the Doctor’s adventures.  Thanks to forum member neogeoMk2 for the scans and the trip down memory lane.

Lego Minifigs series 2 relased in US? Possible UPC decoder…

August 20th, 2010 MattG Posted in Lego, News | No Comments »

While many people haven’t had the chance to complete the first series of Lego mini-figs; there’s signs that the 2nd series is starting to hit in the US.  There’s a few reports on flickr, of all places, of people finding the figures.  Flickr member SavatheAggie has posted a UPC guide for the North American release, which you can see after the jump.  None of these UPC have been validated by AwesomeToyBlog as I haven’t seen these myself.  Time to get myself to the Lego store and the area Toys R Us.

Also, Entertainment Earth still has open pre-orders for a set of 10 Series 2 figures ($29.99) or a Series 2 display box ($164.99) if you want to avoid the hunt.

Vintage box AT-AT found at TRU in Chandler, AZ

August 19th, 2010 MattG Posted in News, Star Wars | 2 Comments »

On today’s lunchtime toy run, I found the Toys R Us exclusive vintage boxed version of Hasbro’s big AT-AT.  The toy itself is the same new AT-AT, but the box is fully inspired by the vintage AT-AT packaging from the 80s (and it is gorgeous as well; the graphic artists at Hasbro knocked this one out of the park).   The toy was in the same location where the normal boxed AT-ATs were earlier this week and the shelf tag had not changed.  The price is not verified, as I did not scan it.  After the jump, check out an image of the toy on the shelf.
