As it’s a new month (and new year, even!) let’s have a quick recap of the Matty monthly sale.  This month the event is Tuesday the 17th, kicking off at 9AM Pacific (Noon Eastern).  Matty’s got quite a bit up his sleeve to kick off 30th Anniversary of Masters of the Universe.  A few changes come into effect with the January sale.  Firstly, remember that prices for “day of” purchases have been bumped up to $22 for a standard figure; subscription prices remain at $20.  Also, Matty’s making available core characters year round starting off with some Masters of the Universe and Ghostbusters offerings.  Finally, January should see the beginning of reduced production numbers, making quantities available to “day of” purchasers more limited.

One of the events at the inaugural Power-con/Thundercon (for the He-Man and Thundercats fandoms, respectively) was a charity auction to benefit the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation.  With select collectible pieces being made available to bidders both on-line and at the show, over $3,500 was raised.  Its great to see the fandom help out worthy causes! Powercon, the first convention to celebrate the Masters of the Universe (and Thundercats) franchise is taking place this weekend in Los Angeles.  Earlier this morning MattyCollector had their panel and announced a few new items for their Masters of the Universe Classics line.  Two new monthly figures were announced, Stinkor (April) and Slushead (May).  For the 30th Anniversary collection, Matty announced that 3rd figure in the line as being Mighty Spector.  They also announce the Q2 subscription beast as being the Griffin, a convention (but not SDCC) exclusive white repaint of the Sorceress and Snake Mountain themed stands.  This makes the line-up for 2012 as:

Our good friend Matty posted quite a news post yesterday – you can see all the details over on the MattyCollector site; but here’s a quick rundown of the key points.

• Club Infinite Earths, Club Eternia and Club Lion Force are all re-opening to subscriptions starting Friday, September 16th.  This final opportunity runs through October 3rd.
• A special subscription is being offered for the MOTU 30th anniversary celebration; these six special figures will be released approximately every other month in 2012.  The first of these is Fearless Photog, the second is Draego, three others remain unannounced and the final will be the winner of the “design a figure” competition.  In the subscription figures will be priced at $20 each.
• Across the board – the day of sale figures will cost more than the figures cost in the subscription.  For Club Infinite Earths; a $20 subscription figure will cost $23 day off..and a $30 oversized figure will cost $45 on the day of sale.  Details of the “day of” prices for the other clubs haven’t been shared yet.
• Attempts are being made to combine shipping of subscription products and things bought “day of”.

That’s the general round up; I do wish they had announced a single figures only Masters of the Universe subscription, I would have picked that up in a heartbeat!

Name: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Complete Second Season
Released: September 13, 2011

Initially released at San Diego Comic-con (with the pictured limited edition packaging); the second season of He-Man’s original animated series gets a wide release from Mill Creek Studios this Tuesday, September 13th.  The 8 disc set includes all 65 episodes of season 2; 10 complete episode scripts, 50 character, creature and artifact profiles, 3 documentaries and 6 episodes with commentary tracks.  The set will be available in stores this week or is available for order now on Amazon.com.

I’ve had the chance to watch a few episodes in the set, and if you’re a fan of He-Man; this set is a must have.  The video and audio quality are good; on par with most 80′s animation releases.  A local station here in Phoenix airs He-Man and She-Ra repeats and the DVD quality is better than that of the local broadcasts.  The story quality varies from episode to episode; there are some standout episodes and some that are rather forgettable – but on a whole the ones that I’ve watched have been fun.  I imagine most folks looking to pick up this will be familiar with the series, so you know exactly what to expect story-wise.  I also spent a fair amount of time looking over the special features; I really enjoyed the documentaries as they provided some insight into the classic series. The packaging of the discs is nice, but a bit unconventional. Inside the case is a booklet and a stack of disks; each in its own paper sleeve. It’s a little different than other multi-disk sets I have, but it gets the job done and isn’t flimsy like some solutions tend to be.

The DVD release of the 2nd season of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe provides exactly what any fan of the series would want; a good quality release at a great price considering the number of episodes and special features included. All in all this set gets high marks, if you’re a He-Fan you should check it out!
