Cars 2 trailer done in Lego

May 19th, 2011 MattG Posted in Lego, News No Comments »

Check out the below video to see the first Cars 2 trailer recreated in Lego product (and, of course, spotlighting their new Cars 2 sets)!  This is a frame by frame reconstruction, which used thousands of Lego bricks. The animation was even done at 24 frames / second, which is the normal frame rate for film.  This is an impressive effort; be sure to give it a watch.

New Lego Architecture set available – van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House

April 9th, 2011 MattG Posted in Lego, News No Comments »

One of my favorite Lego product lines is the Architecture series, so I was disappointed when there were no new sets on display at Toy Fair.  However, at the show, I was reassured that the series would continue and new sets are on the way.  Just this week, the newest set hit shop.lego.com; Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth house.  This one room glass walled weekend house is instantly recognized as an iconic piece of modern architecture.  The set has a retail price of $59.99 and includes 546 pieces.  For the complete lego press release announcing the set, keep reading past the jump.

Potential Lego / Playmobil deals at Barnes & Noble

April 1st, 2011 MattG Posted in Lego, Sale 1 Comment »

While I realize the toy selection is limited at Barnes & Noble, there’s a 50% off coupon available here, which is valid on Legos and Playmobil items (and…you know…books and stuff).  If your store has some stock, this is a great opportunity to save some money on some lego.  The coupon is valid through April 3rd.

Lego Minifigs series 4 found at Chandler, AZ TRU

March 22nd, 2011 MattG Posted in Lego, News No Comments »

Just the other day I posted the date to expect Series 4 in your local Lego store and postulated that they’d soon be at Toys R Us.  Well, I’m thrilled to say that I was right, as today I found the orange packets at the local Toys R Us in Chandler, AZ.  Picked up four figures today (2 trips with 2 each due to their limits), will hopefully make some good progress before they sell out completely.

I’ll also note that it seems they have restocked with more of series 3, this is the first time I’ve seen any of the series make a second appearance at retail.  Perhaps this is a sign that these will not be so hard to find in the future?

Toy Fair 2011 – Lego

February 14th, 2011 MattG Posted in Lego, News 2 Comments »

Early Sunday morning, before Toy Fair officially opened Lego welcomed collectors into their showroom for a tour of their showroom and breakfast. On display were most of the Lego lines, one notable absence being the Lego Architecture line, however, the Lego reps did say that Architecture was continuing this year.

On the mini-figure front, boxes and images for the 3 planned collectible mini-figure series this year were on display.  These are Series 3, 4, and 5 with series 3 already available at retail (or may have already left your area).  Some of the standout figures in series 4 and 5 are hockey player, kimono girl, and guy in a lizard suit.  I’m really addicted to these mini-figure collections, so I’m thrilled to see them continuing this year.

New for this year are the Alien Conquest line, an original Lego line.  These sets have some great action features built into them and I’m really pleased to see an original line vs. another licensed property.  Also new, which has already hit a store near you is the Ninjago series, which combines the construction aspect of Lego with the spinning-top combat game.  On the licensed front there were 2 new properties, Pirates of the Caribbean and Cars 2.  For each of these properties Lego had a huge display piece, a life-size Jack Sparrow for Pirates and a huge Lightning McQueen for Cars2.

On the Star Wars front, the most exciting piece of news is the announcement of a Star Wars Advent Calendar! I’ve enjoyed the past 2 Lego City calendars, so it’s impossible that I won’t love this one as well.  The other Star Wars item that really caught my eye was a new Millennium Falcon kit.  It’s a nice sized model, not prohibitively large, but not too small.  And finally there’s an Ewok Attack set with 2 mini-figure Ewoks – what’s not to love there?

Thanks to Lego for hosting this event for collectors and giving us the opportunity to photograph their showroom.  Check out the gallery below for images from the Lego showroom, including the Lego Star Wars line-up, Lego Heroes, Lego City, and everything else.

Non-blind bagged blind bagged Lego Minifigs found at Toys R Us?

January 5th, 2011 MattG Posted in Lego, News No Comments »

An interesting report came across the twitter today (follow me!).  There’s a report of Toys R Us selling labeled Lego Mini-figs.  Instead of having to decode Lego’s ‘dot-system’ the figures were clearly labeled with a sticker on the corner of the package.  Check out the report here, I haven’t seen this at my Toys R Us; have you?
