Sarah Michelle Gellar Lights Legoland Christmas Tree

lego logoLast evening at LEGOLAND, Emmy award winner Sarah Michelle Gellar and her family help Santa light the 30 foot tall LEGO Christmas tree during the 12th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Carlsbad, California.

During the ceremony, LEGOLAND presented a $10,000 check on behalf of Gellar to Baby Buggy Inc, which works with organizations nationwide to distribute new and gently used essentials such as cribs, diapers and strollers to families.

“When LEGOLAND asked me to light the tree and at the same time do it as a way to raise money for Baby Buggy, which is all about children in poverty, it’s marrying my two favorite holiday traditions,” said Gellar.

“A donation like this can help us provide more than the equivalent of 110,000 diapers to families in need,” said Director of Baby Buggy in Los Angeles Carly Harrill.

Gellar, her daughter Charlotte(5) and son Rocky (2) joined Santa on stage to  light the LEGO tree, complete with a LEGO star. The 30-foot tree is created out of more than 245,000 green , adorned with more than 400 LEGO ornaments and has over 11,000 LED lights. 15 of those ornaments are Star Wars Death Star ornaments custom built from over 1000 Lego pieces by LEGOLAND’S resident masterbuilders . Sarah Michelle Gellar’s husband, Fredie Prinze Jr., is providing the voice for Kanan Jarrus in the new Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels.

Following the ceremony, Gellar and her children raced to the ice skating rink at the entrance of the Park next to LEGOLAND Hotel to enjoy the rest of the evening skating.

The tree lighting ceremony is part of LEGOLAND California Resort’s coolest holiday celebration ever, Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights. Now through January 4, 2015, the Park transforms into a winter wonderland featuring more real snow than ever before with a tubing area for kids to slide down and, new this year, guests are invited to ice skate as an upgrade. Guests can enjoy festive entertainment plus nightly fireworks Dec. 26 through 31 and will conclude with San Diego’s biggest Kids’ New Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 31. All Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights activities located inside the Park are included with regular Park admission. Tickets for the ice rink, located between the ticket booths and LEGOLAND® Hotel, are sold separately.

AwesomeToyBlog Holiday Gift Guide Day 1 – Lego

AwesomeToyBlog Gift Guide IconTo kick off the latest edition of the AwesomeToyBlog Holiday Gift Guide, we’re going to look at a few awesome Lego products that I know I’d love to see under the tree. This guide will feature items in three different price ranges, stocking stuffers (around $20 and below), gifts around $50 and below and finally those higher ticket gifts.

Stocking Stuffers

The obvious gift in this category would be a copy of this summer’s Lego movie. The movie was a huge hit, was fun to watch and could be watched over and over again. It’s likely you’ll find many opportunities to pick this up at a discount during the holiday shopping season. Lego’s Melting Room set, with an SRP of $12.99 makes a great companion set for the movie, and includes minifigs of both Emmet and Wyldstyle.

Other great Lego stocking stuffer ideas are any of the numerous small holiday sets available this year. Over the Thanksgiving weekend I picked up the Snowman set at Target for under $10. Other sets I saw were a Reindeer and a Christmas tree decorating set. These are the perfect size to top off a stocking.

Gifts Around $50

In this price range it’s hard to go wrong with any of the Lego videogames. Lego Batman 3 is the most recent and introduces enough new gameplay to keep it feeling fresh. If the person you’re buying for is more of a Marvel fan there’s also a Lego Marvel game that’s a ton of fun.

Older kids (and adults) may appreciate the Lego Architecture sets – they’re one of my favorite themes. Many of these sets run in the $20 to $50 range with the newest addition to the line being the Trevi Fountain ($49.99). Other favorites include Big Ben ($29.99) and the Leaning Tower of Pisa ($34.99)

Big Ticket Gifts

There’s nothing quite like having a big box under the tree, picking it up and hearing the telltale sound of over a thousand Legos. Lego’s Star Wars line is eternally popular and this year they’ve returned to one of Star Wars’ most popular vehicles, the AT-AT. With 1137 pieces, this $110 set is sure to please any Star Wars fan.

The Creator line of modular building are also amazing. These are a series of detailed buildings which all connect to create a city street. There are several of these available now with two of the more recent additions being the Parisian Restaurant and the Palace Cinema. If you’re looking to establish a Lego tradition – these are a great idea as there’s no signs this theme is stopping soon as 2015 is kicking off with the release of a Detective’s office. These sets typically have 2000+ pieces and a price tag around $150

Lego Minifigures Series 12 Hitting Walgreens

lego logoWalgreens seems to be on quite a roll. Over the weekend, while out on a Dalek hunt I found the 12th series of Lego minifigs in one of the Phoenix area Walgreens. Subsequent trips to other locations also have the figures in stock. Two warnings though…the gamer minifig seems to be heavily packed (or I’m buying all of them) and the Walgreens price is a bit higher than most other retails stops.
