The Power of the Daleks is one of the most celebrated Doctor Who adventures, and yet no complete film recordings are known to have survived. The master negatives were destroyed in an archive purge in 1974. This brand new animation, being released 50 years after its only UK broadcast, is based on the program’s original audio recordings, surviving photographs, and film clips. The six-part adventure features the regeneration – or as it was then called “renewal” – of First Doctor, William Hartnell, into Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, and follows the Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) as they do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.
“Ahead of the premiere on BBC AMERICA, it is a rare treat to be able to bring the lost episode, Power of the Daleks, to life using modern animation techniques. Doctor Who cinema events have been incredibly successful, and this is extraordinary opportunity to allow a new generation of fans the opportunity to experience this classic adventure for the first time,” said Soumya Sriraman, EVP, Franchise and Digital Enterprises, BBC Worldwide North America.
“We’re pleased to continue our long-standing and successful partnership with BBC AMERICA to bring more fantastic Doctor Who content to the big screen,” said Fathom Events Vice President of Programming Kymberli Frueh. “The Whovians are always one of our biggest and most passionate groups of fans at the cinemas.”
Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks is produced and directed by Charles Norton, with character designs from acclaimed comic book artists Martin Geraghty and Adrian Salmon.
Since its launch in 1963, Doctor Who has become one of the world’s best loved dramas and is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful sci-fi series ever. Character Options today revealed the all new toy of the Twelth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver – which is available now! This new toy version is a faithful recreation of the current Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver which debuted in the Series 9 Episode ‘Hell Bent’. This is the first Sonic to have 4 light modes and four sound FX. The model has been designed as a replica from the Series 9 Prop.
As all fans would know, the Doctor has carried many Sonic Screwdrivers of various designs throughout his lifetimes, ranging from a simple silver coloured tube to more complex illuminated and articulated versions.
This second Sonic for the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, was ‘gifted’ to him by the TARDIS itself after his previous version was lost. Although we are yet to discover all of the new Sonic’s abilities, like the Doctor himself, it has become ever more complex and mysterious. This multipurpose tool features numerous settings and can open most locks, detect all manner of deadly rays, read bio-signs and generate Sonic waves of great power.
Alasdair Dewar, Head of Product Development at Character Options commented: “Since this Twelfth Doctor’s Second Sonic Screwdriver appeared at the end of series 9, we have been inundated by fan requests to produce a toy replica as part of our toy range. We are therefore very proud to finally be able to reveal it. The Sonic Screwdriver has historically been one of the most sought after toys for fans and collectors alike and we hope they will be as delighted with it as we are.”
For fans in North America BBC Worldwide North America has announced that the Twelfth Doctor Second Sonic Screwdriver is available starting today, shipping exclusively in the U.S. for $29.98 from BBC Shop US and Doctor Who Shop US and in Canada for $37.98 from BBC Shop Canada and Doctor Who Shop Canada. For a limited time only, exclusively on BBC Shop and BBC Doctor Who Shop, fans will receive a gift with the purchase of the new Sonic Screwdriver – an exclusive pack of trading cards from the Twelfth Doctor’s limited edition – while supplies last.

Over the past several years, Underground Toys has become a go-to spot for Doctor Who and Star Wars homeware products. That trend continues this year as homewares were huge…and there were some phenomenally clever ideas.
Among the standout homewares items were a Death Star BBQ grill, Darth Vader oven mitts (even a sith lord doesn’t want his hands burnt – a second time), a BB8 tea kettle and an amazing Yoda welcome mat (this may be needed at my house).
It wasn’t all housewares, of course, Underground Toys’ plush lines will continue and their Doctor Who 5″ line is getting refreshed with some new packaging. There’s nothing to report currently on any new 5″ figures – but with several new releases in 2015 (Clara, Missy, 8th Doctor, 12th Doctor) the line is still kicking.
Fans of Sherlock have some exciting toys on the way with minifigs on display. No pictures were allowed, but fans will love getting their hands on these.
Check out the gallery below for many of the new products at Underground Toys’ booth at toy fair! They’ve got some big things up their sleeves for later this year, so stay tuned.
Diehard science fiction fans don’t just collect one piece of memorabilia from their favorite films or TV shows; they spread their love it all over their house. Underground Toys is making this ultimate gesture of fandom easier this holiday season with a new collection of Star Wars and Doctor Who houseware products as well as an expanded line of toys and other gift items that extend the sci-fi devotion to the kitchen and beyond.
According to New York Magazine’s daily entertainment coverage on Vulture.com both Star Wars and Doctor Who rank among the “25 Most Devoted Fan Bases.” Doctor Who comes in ninth, which in the United States enjoys “a notably large female following compared to other long-running sci-fi properties.” Meanwhile, the Star Wars franchise ranks second on the list with a “spinoff industry [that] includes toys, video games, CDs, books, TV series, cookie molds [and] Mr. Potato Heads.”
Now, just in time for holiday gift giving, a collection of household items joins that array of licensed products thanks to Underground Toys’ cross over into the housewares arena. Useful for all fans, these items will especially appeal to the female Star Wars or Doctor Who fanatic on one’s holiday shopping list.
Among the new kitchenware products to be added to the Underground Toys lineup this holiday season are a Darth Vader oven glove (MSRP $14.99) twin pack, Lightsaber BBQ tongs (MSRP $39.99) in both Yoda and Darth Vader options, Droid salt and pepper shakers (MSRP $19.99) and an X-Wing knife block (MSRP $99.99). The company is also catering to Whovians this holiday gift-giving season with a Doctor Who TARDIS lidded tumbler (MSRP $14.99) and a Doctor Who TARDIS travel mug (MSRP $12.99).
Underground Toys has also expanded its toy and other gift offerings for Doctor Who and Star Wars enthusiasts. For the child in everyone, the company has released a 16” Lightsaber Battle Yoda (MSRP $49.99) with animatronic movement and spoken phrases and a 48” giant Chewbacca (MSRP $299.99) premium talking plush. In addition, Underground Toys is now carrying a Doctor Who Dr. Sonic Screwdriver (MSRP $24.99), available in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th doctors as well as Day of the Doctor, 50th Anniversary 10th Dr., Future 10th Dr. and The Master’s options, and a Doctor Who Dr. with Fez Plush (MSRP $19.99), featuring a talking 11th doctor.
The Underground Toys holiday lineup is available for purchase at major US retailers including Walmart, Target, Hot Topic, ToysRUs, Gamestop and Barnes & Noble. Canadian retailers include Pixleberrel, Sunrise Records, and HMV.
Occasionaly there’s a news item that personally is a favorite to write up – this is one of those. Funko has announced a second series of Doctor Who Pop! vinyls, which includes the best companion ever in the course of the show – Sarah Jane Smith.
Of course Sarah Jane isn’t alone in the series, also being released are the 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler (another fine companion), Captain Jack Harkness, River Song and the Silence.
Gamestop will have an exclusive for this series – everyone’s favorite tin dog – K-9. He’ll be required if you want to have a Pop! version of ‘K-9 and Company’ (google it).
These will all be available in February.
Character Options sent over some cool news today as they’ved detailed some of the Doctor Who product that will be available in UK Toys R Us. Among them is an all new version of the 8th Doctor! This figure is listed here at toysrus.co.uk and should be available starting November 9th. US fans, fret not, as there is also word that this figure will be available stateside – which is good as it’s awesome.
See this new 8th Doctor and all the other product heading to UK Toys R Us’ below, including a very cool 3.75″ Supreme Dalek that I have to own.
