What I Opened Today: Star Wars Black Series Prototype Boba Fett

starwarsThis feature is usually ‘What I Bought Today’, but there’s a backup in the HQ of awesome toys I haven’t gotten around to opening. Today we’re looking at the Walgreens exclusive Prototype Boba Fett. Based on reports, it sounds like he’s already blown through stores, but worry not – there’s another 40,000 Bobas on the way.

Package Bio: Before he put on the familiar Mandalorian Armor from the Star Wars saga, this notorious bounty hunter was initially envisioned as a “super trooper” in all-white armor. This special figure captures the beginning of a character that has become a legend who is both respected and feared across the galaxy – Boba Fett.

Thoughts: Figures like this always make for pretty short posts, if you’ve both the SDCC or regular retail of edition of Boba Fett you know exactly what you’re getting here – just in white. As far as straight up repaints go, Prototype Boba Fett is a pretty solid choice in the Star Wars universe.  I’ve got no complaints about the figure itself…in either green or white it’s really quite good. It’ll still be good when we get a blue/grey version for Jango. If you don’t have the previous version, Boba Fett features articulated ankles, knees, thigh swivel, hips. waist, shoulders, elbows, wrists and neck. Boba Fett includes his rocket pack and two guns.

While I am thoroughly pleased by this figure, if Hasbro had really wanted to pull out all the stops there are two tweaks that would have made this the perfect prototype version Boba Fett. The first would be to not have the dent in the helmet…the second would be to have his cape be a small Star Wars beach towel – like it was in the original test costume. The cape might be overkills, but the non-dented helmet would have been a nice touch.

Summary: It’s an exclusive and it’s Boba Fett…you’ll want this regardless of what this post said, but you’re in luck since it’s a solid figure. If you want to try your luck, you can check in-store inventory here. Walgreens say more are on the way, and I hope more are on the way…more exclusives, that is. The experience of picking up this season’s Walgreens exclusives has been surprisingly easier than I expect and the people who work there are just super pleasant.
